Born in Albany, New York, Walter Palmer studied with Frederick Church in Hudson, New York and later with Carolus-Duran in Paris. Palmer won the National Academy's Julius Hallgarten Prize for a winter landscape, titled January, in 1887. Following this success, Palmer concentrated on winter snow scenes for which he is best known.

The painting has been cleaned and restored, with evidence of restoration visible under UV light; stable craquelure. Overall, the painting presents well and is ready for display.
