Oil on canvas, signed at lower left, presented in a period Barbizon style gilt composition frame.

Stretcher size 20 x 26 in.; Frame dimensions 31 1/2 x 37 1/2 in.

Arthur Parton was born in Hudson, New York. In 1859, he was sent to Philadelphia to study with William Trost Richards and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After a decade living and painting in Philadelphia and New York, Parton traveled to France where he was exposed to the Barbizon School of landscape painting.

Parton returned to New York and was elected a full member of the National Academy in 1884. He exhibited widely during his lifetime, and was awarded prizes at the 1900 Paris Exposition and the 1904 St. Louis Exposition, among others. Paintings by Parton are in numerous public and private collections including the Brooklyn Museum, New York, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana.

One minor spot of re-touch visible under UV light; some chipping and retouch to frame; overall in good estate condition.
