Henry Pember Smith with born in Waterford, Connecticut. He was self-taught artist, and spent several years studying the works of Old Masters while traveling throughout Europe.

Back in the United States, Smith maintained a studio in New York City and exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design. He is best known for his New England landscapes, particularly views around Cape Ann, Massachusetts, Old Lyme, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Jersey.

Small patch to verso with minor associated retouch to sky; minimal craquelure; faint stretcher mark.
