Barbara Pennington was born and grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She was awarded a four year scholarship to study art at the University of Alabama, where she earned both her BA and MFA in painting and print-making. In 1960, she moved to New York, and in 1968 to Connecticut. She was a passionate and talented art instructor, much admired by her high school students.

Pennington returned to Alabama in 1977, establishing her gallery and studio in Gordo. She is best known for her colorful expressionist abstract paintings, however, she also created powerful figural paintings as well. In 2015, the Mint Museum in Charlotte acquired Pennington's large scale painting, Selma, completed while the artist was living in New York in 1965.

Very good estate condition.
