Jose Benitez Sanchez was a Huichol (or Wixárika) shaman and artist. His strikingly beautiful and complex yarn paintings are based on dreams, peyote-inspired visions and ceremonies. A solo exhibition of his paintings was held in 2003 at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and his works are in numerous public and private collections including the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
