Bane received her MFA from UNC-Greensboro (then Woman's College) in 1959. Influenced by her mentor, Gregory Ivy, she has held several teaching positions throughout her long and successful career.

Her work may be found in many public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina; and the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina.
