Now living and painting in the mountains of North Carolina, Joseph Cave was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. He studied painting at the University of Georgia, eventually earning his BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute in 1962 and his MFA from San Francisco State College in 1964.

After teaching for several years at the Memphis Academy of Art and Southwestern in Memphis (now known as Rhodes College), Cave returned to California.

This painting was completed while Cave and his family lived in Portugal.
