Acquired by the consignor from the artist in 1993.

Ivey Hayes was born in Pender County, North Carolina. He graduated from North Carolina College (now N.C. Central University) in 1970. He continued his studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his MFA in 1975 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

In 2006, his work was featured in an exhibit, "Five American Artists," at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was in proud company, alongside works by Romare Bearden, Minnie Evans, Faith Ringgold and Big Al Carter.

The North Carolina Central University in Durham, presented a retrospective exhibition of Hayes' work in 2012.

This watercolor is from his "visionary" period from which Hayes' drew inspiration from Africa with geometric and abstracted figural expression.

Very good estate condition; not examined out of the frame.
