The first a watercolor on paper, unsigned, pencil inscribed "View on the Rhine" and "by Coty" in two separate hands to the verso, matted and framed under glass (Sheet 4 3/8 x 6 5/8 in; Frame dimensions 10 1/2 x 12 1/2 in.); the second a watercolor on paper, unsigned, pencil inscribed to verso "A View in Wales," matted and framed under glass (Sheet 4 3/8 x 6 5/8 in.; Frame dimensions 10 1/2 x 12 1/2 in.).

John Varley was an English watercolor painter and astrologer. He was also a close friend of William Blake and collaborated together on the book, Visionary Heads. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy, before founding the Old Watercolor Society in 1805.
