Two Signed English Side Hammer Box Lock Percussion Pistols

Mid-19th century, the first a .45 caliber pistol with 5-in. octagonal Damascus steel barrel with two Birmingham proofs on left side, bead front sight, inlaid bands at breech, signed JOSEPH THOMPSON on the barrel's top flat, fancy foliate scroll decoration, finely checkered wooden grip, the butt opens for percussion cap storage, the left side of the box lock is fitted with a belt clip for hanging, a swivel ramrod is below the barrel and a blank silver oval on the grip's shoulder still awaits an owner's engraved initials; the second pistol has a rifled .50 caliber bore, the 4-1/4 in. octagonal steel barrel names maker ROCKS & BLAKEMORES. on the top flat and sports a brass bead sight, its engraved brass box lock supports a steel hammer, trigger, and guard, the checkered grip with cap storage compartment, the shoulder with blank owner's plate.

Longest 10-1/4 in.

Both weapons with working action that is somewhat tight; nice patinated surfaces; very little oxidation; overall very good condition.
