French born Jean Schlumberger (1907-1987) first began his career with Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1930s. Later moving to New York, he opened a jewelry design house with his partner, Nicolas Bongard, in 1946. Approached by Walter Hoving, president of Tiffany & Co., he began designing for them and was one of four jewelry designers ever granted the privilege of signing their work for Tiffany & Co., to include Elsa Peretti, Paloma Picasso, and Frank Gehry. Schlumberger is recognized as one of the leading designers of the twentieth century, whose pieces were included in the collections of the Duchess of Windsor, Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, among others.
