Norman Hepple was born in London and studied at the Goldsmiths College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. During World War II he was appointed official artist to the National Fire Brigade, and several works from that period are now held in the Imperial War Museum. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1948, serving as the president from 1979 to 1983. In 1950, Hepple elected to the New English Art Club and was made a full Academician for the Royal Academy in 1961.
