Henry Bismuth was born in Paris and moved to the United States in 2010. He currently maintains his home and studio in New York.

He left medical school in 1986 after decided to pursue his passion: painting and drawing. He counts many American painters as his greatest influencers, from John Singer Sargent, Thomas Eakins and Robert Henri, to Georgian O'Keeffe and Andrew Wyeth. Bismuth's first two one-man shows were held in Paris and Brussels in 1988 and he has been exhibiting extensively since then.
