Mildred Nix Huie was born in Augusta, Georgia. She attended Shorter College in Rome, Georgia, graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Classical Education, and was 1950 Woman of the Year in Albany, Georgia. In 1962, she and a group of artists established the Left Bank Art Gallery on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Her home on the island is now a house museum and filled with her impressionistic scenes of life on the Golden Isles.
