Anna Brewster was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of playwright Anna Matlack and the painter William Trost Richards. She studied at the Cowles School of Art in Boston, with William Merritt Chase and John LaFarge at the Art Students Leauge in New York, and the Academie Julian in Paris.

She traveled extensively on her own and with her husband. She also exhibited frequently throughout her life, showing at the Royal Academy in London, the National Academy in New York and numerous galleries.

Minor craquelure to sky in upper left quadrant; no evidence of restoration visible under UV light.
