Best known as an actor, Joseph Jefferson was also a painter in the Barbizon and Dutch landscape tradition. He exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design in New York. Two of his paintings are in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

Accompanying the lot is an autographed copy of Joseph Jefferson: Reminiscences of a Fellow Player by Francis Wilson (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1907).
