Charles Courtney Curran was a prolific American impressionist. Born in Kentucky, he moved to Ohio to study at the Cincinnati School of Design. One year later he was off to New York and enrolled at the National Academy of Design. He continued his studies at the Art Students League before leaving for Paris, and the Academie Julian, in 1889.

Best known for his brilliant light-filled landscapes featuring beautiful young women, Curran was also a sought after portraitist.

Lucy Ann Cole Burwell (1847-1907) was the daughter of Doctor Cole and Mary A. Cole of Franklin County, North Carolina. Lucy married William Henry Burwell in Warren County, North Carolina on October 1st, 1872.

Drying cracks and alligatoring throughout; yellowing varnish; no evidence of retouch visible under UV light; minor chipping and rubbing to frame.
