José Ruiz Blasco (José Ruiz y Blasco), an accomplished artist and art teacher in his own right, was also Pablo Picasso's father and his first art teacher. Ruiz y Blasco taught drawing at the Escuela Provincial de Bellas Artes in Spain, specializing in still life, landscape, and avian imagery. He later moved to La Coruña then Barcelona to continue teaching. Ruiz y Blasco gave Picasso his first art lessons when Picasso was only seven years old.
