Oil on canvas, signed at lower left, presented under glass in a very fine period gilt composition frame.

Stretcher size 30 x 25 in.; Frame dimensions 42 1/2 x 37 in.

Originally from Connecticut, Joseph Henry Boston is most closely associated with New York. At the age of 15, he enrolled in the antique class at the National Academy of Design school in 1875. He first exhibited at the Academy's annual in 1884, and would be included in a total of fifty-eight annual exhibitions.

Boston is best known for his society portraits and impressionist landscapes. He held memberships at the National Academy of Design, The Society of American Artists, the Salmagundi Club, the Brooklyn Art Club, the National Arts Club and the Lotos Club in New York.

Stable craquelure; one small paint flake to cloud; no evidence of restoration visible under UV light; minor rubbing and chipping to frame.
