Federal Schenkl Artillery Shell From the Battle of Locust Hill, West Virginia

9 -1/4 in., the brass fuse with an 1861 patent date; one side of the shell is painted to read, "FOUND ON THE BATTLEFIELD OF LOCUST HILL." This artifact thus commemorates a horrific contest between Confederate General Jubal Early and Union General Philip Sheridan that took place on August 8, 1864. The site is now preserved under the Locust Hill Golf Course.
