Rand Smith was born in Utah, raised in California, and earned his MFA degree at Arizona State University. He is known for his symbolist figural sculptures, as he explains “each piece...tells a story. I don’t mean a story with a beginning, middle and end, rather a piece of a larger experience. The constructive nature of my work and the materials I use facilitate a morphing of forms to create the symbols for my stories. I hope to convey the nature, principles and circumstance which I find in my own life. And because none of us live in a vacuum, I believe others can find connections to their own life experiences through my art.”
Rand has had a successful career as an illustration artist, foundations instructor at Cottey College, Coordinator of Foundations Courses at UVU Art Department, and as the ceramic teacher Weber School District at Roy High School. His work is represented by Wilde Meyers Galleries in Arizona, with additional representation in Palm Desert, California; Nashville, Tennessee; Boulder, Colorado; and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
