John Torres grew up as one of eleven children, in a family with diverse ancestry including Cuban, African, Native American roots. In the early 1960s, Mr. Torres left an engineering scholarship to Michigan State University after one year of study to pursue his passion for art and arts education. John attended the Art Students League of New York in the 1960's, and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1972. In 1999, he received a master's of education with a concentration in the arts from Harvard University, where he was a Stephen J. Ross Fellow.

He was best known for his large scale figurative carved stone sculptures with an emphasis on the female form. He is also remembered for the inspirational instruction he gifted students in schools throughout Virginia. John taught courses at Virginia Commonwealth University, John Marshall High School, Wakefield High School, and Shockoe Artspace.

A few minor scuffs; some black paint to base edge; otherwise good estate condition.
