Lot Details & Additional Photographs

12 x 20 in.

Vernon Pratt was an associate professor of art at Duke University. A graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Pratt enrolled at Duke in 1958 but finished his undergraduate and master's degrees at the San Francisco Art Institute. He returned to Duke in 1964 as a professor, a position he held until his untimely death in 2000.

Vernon Pratt, who referred to himself as the "Art Rat," was a prolific painter whose works melded mathematics and jazz music on a two dimensional plane. He was honored with solo exhibitions at the North Carolina Museum of Art (1985-1986) and twice at The Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State University (2016-2017 and 2018-2019). His work is in numerous public North Carolina collections including the NCMA in Raleigh; the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham; and the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro.

Some dark smudging around wrapped canvas edges.
