Johnny Johnson was born in Henderson, North Carolina. A talented artist from a young age, he studied art eduction at Virginia State College and earned an M.A. in fine art from Howard University in Washington, D.C. While in D.C., he furthered his studies at the famed Corcoran School.

In 1959, Johnson moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia to teach art at Walker-Grant, the city's first publicly supported black high school. In 1968, he became the first Black faculty member at the University of Mary Washington. Johnson was named Virginia's Teacher of the Year in 1977 and was awarded the Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Johnson's art has been exhibited throughout the United States, as well as internationally - from Benin to Jamaica and everywhere in between.
