Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Beverly McIver is currently Professor of the Practice of Visual Arts at Duke University. McIver’s work is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, North Carolina; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; Philadelphia Academy of Art, Pennsylvania; North Carolina Central University, Durham; Asheville Museum of Art, North Carolina; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California; Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina; and many others.

McIver has had solo exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in 2017, North Carolina Museum of Art in 2011, and at the Mint Museum UPTOWN in 2012. Three of her portraits are currently on view in the Nasher Museum's Reckoning and Resilience: North Carolina Art Now, January 13 - July 10, 2022. The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is currently presenting Full Circle, a survey of more than 50 works by Beverly McIver, February 12 - September 4, 2022.

This important and early work by Beverly McIver is a portrait of her sister Renee. The pieced fabric surround is a nod to Faith Ringgold, with whom McIver served as an assistant during the artist's residency in 1992 at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
