The brooch was worn by Agnes Jacobus (1863-1938) on the day of her marriage to Elisha H. Pratt (1855-1900) on September 29, 1886. The wedding, held at the residence of Mrs. Thomas H. Herring of Hillside Park, Ridgefield, New Jersey, was an event written up in the society pages, according to her great granddaughter, of the New York Times
that included the following observation, "The bride wore her wedding robes, displaying in beautiful simplicity only a diamond crescent, a gift of her husband, and, as a lady observed, 'she looked indeed a queen.'"
