James Louis Lundean was raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Showing a talent for drawing from a young age, Lundean dropped out of college and left for New York City. He became a member of the Art Students League, where he studied with George Luks and other prominent American artists.

Lundean had always been lured by the romance of the American West. He spent some time among Native Americans while growing up in Iowa and styled himself as an American cowboy. He found success as an illustrator for magazines and other publications that sent him across the country to capture sporting and other equestrian events for their followers.

In 1945, Lundean married Marjorie Daingerfield. An artist in her own right and the daughter of Elliott Daingerfield, the two met at a gallery opening in New York City. After their marriage, the couple summered in the south. Their southern summer home and studio was Westglow, Daingerfield's estate in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

Good estate condition; not examined out of the frames.
