Mary Odiorne's Framed 1831 Pictorial Needlework Sampler, New Hampshire

Durham, New Hampshire, worked in multi-color silk on linen ground, top register with upper and lower case alphabet rows and name and date stitched by maker, "Wrought by Mary F. Odiorne in 1831 aged 12 years," bottom register with flower filled vases and with birds on branches in upper corners, the sides with large flowering blooms and buds on a climbing vine, conservation mounted and presented in a molded cherry frame.

Research accompanying lot identifies the maker as Mary Folsom Odiorne, born May 5, 1819 in Durham, New Hampshire to Theophilus Odiorne (abt 1798-1835) and Sarah (Gordon) Odiorne (abt 1800-1847) and later marrying John Hill (circa 1850).

Purchased October 2009 from M. Finkel & Daughter, Philadelphia and accompanied by photocopy of original sales receipt and with research on maker's family.

Appears to be in good estate condition; some wear at selvedge likely from early framing; not examined out-of-frame.
