Framed Antique Ship Needlework, Wales

Circa 1825, worked in multi-color silk threads on linen, the ship "John and Ellin" (Ellen) worked in satin stitch sailing above green and yellow waves, within a floral vine border with ribbon to center, conservation mounted in a molded, painted frame.

Research accompanied work providing the Register of Shipping and states the the ship was built in Sunderland and sailed from 1822-1829 primarily on the Yarmouth coast.

Sight size 11.25 x 15.25 in.; Frame size 14.75 x 18.75 in.

Private Collection, Wilmington, North Carolina

Purchased November 2010 from M. Finkel and Daughter, Philadelphia and accompanied by photocopy of sales receipt, photocopy of the listing in The Register of Shipping for the Year 1829, and correspondence from the Maritime History Archive, Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Some stitch loss to waves; frame with some nicks; not examined out-of-frame.
