Worked in green, pink, and brown silk threads on wool, with three alphanumeric rows above the biblical verse Ecclesiastes 12:1 that the maker has stitched in both French and English, bottom register with a heart with sawtooth border enclosing maker's name and date, "Mercy / Gillow / May 3 / 1769," to each side of verse is an oak tree and squirrel, all within an acorn motif border, conservation mounted and presented in a gold leaf frame.

Previous research indicates that the maker was born in 1757 to Thomas and Ann Gillow in the small coastal town of St. Nicholas Wade outside of London. Documentation further reveals it was the ancestral home of the Gillow family dating back to the 16th century.

Frame size 15.5 x 13.5 in.

Purchased November 2010 from M. Finkel & Daughter, Philadelphia and accompanied by photocopy of original sales receipt and a research file provided at time of purchase.

A few small holes concealed by backing; frame with some nicks and paint loss; not examined out-of-frame.
