Justin McCarthy was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. After several personal and family set-backs, he suffered a nervous breakdown and spent five years in a mental hospital. At the encouragement of his mother, McCarthy turned to painting as a means of recovering and expressing himself. His works are in numerous prominent collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC and the American Folk Art Museum in New York.
