Missouri born Emmett John Fritz was keen to get to New York. After graduating from Pratt Institute in 1937 and began his career in the arts as an illustrator and cartoonist.
Fritz moved to Florida in 1950 and settled in St. Augustine. He is best known for his scenes of the oldest city in the United States. Although he maintained a studio on St. George Street, he preferred painting outside. He could often be found on the streets and sidewalks, capturing his surroundings in an impressionistic and painterly style.
