Koons began a long teaching career at Bob Jones University in 1955, retiring in 1995. He was an artist known primarily for his paintings of barns, churches, mills, and rural scenes. He had over 45 one-man exhibitions, more than 100 group exhibitions, and exhibited in regional and national competitions where he received numerous awards. His works are in numerous public and private collections, including The Gibbes Museum, Charleston, SC; The Greenville County Museum of Art; The South Carolina State Art Collection; and The Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC.
