Norwood MacGilvary was born in Bangkok, Thailand where he parents were serving as missionaries. He moved to the United States at the age of 14 and attended a private school in Virginia. He went on to study at Davidson College in North Carolina where he graduated as class Valedictorian in 1896.

After Davidson, MacGilvary continued his studies in art and philosophy at Berkeley and Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco. He then went to Paris where he exhibited in the Paris Salon. He returned to the United States in 1906, where he found success as a magazine illustrator.

MacGilvary eventually found his way to Pennsylvania. He was an associate professor of painting at Carnegie Institute in Pittsburg from 1921 until 1943. He also served as president for the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.
