Alexander Calder began creating Cirque Calder in 1926. The work included many pieces utilizing a myriad of materials and mechanized elements that would allow him to present a multi-act "circus." This curious and delightful work was performed by Calder for artist colleagues and friends, including Piet Mondrian, Joan Miró and Marcel Duchamp.
