Quarter Plate Ambrotype of an Armed Virginia Militia Officer
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Circa 1860, the unidentified sitter wearing an officer's uniform with a single row of buttons, epaulettes, a burgundy sash, striped trousers, and a sword belt secured by a two-piece Virginia state seal plate.

From a private West Virginia collection

Close examination of the belt plate with a 20X loupe clearly reveals Virtus standing with her sword; her fallen foe is lost to the shadows.

The case is intact and the image has a fine appearance; some blistering to the emulsion is visible when the image is angled to light.
