Purchased by the consignor from Ruth at her hair dresser's shop in the early 1990s.

Born in Vance County, Williams' parents were sharecroppers and her memories of rural life populate her folk art paintings. In 2009 an exhibition of her paintings, entitled “Ruth Russell Williams: Master Storyteller," was displayed at the NCCU Art Museum in Durham, NC.
