Oil on panel, inscribed and signed at lower right "Painted in Three Hours by Weaver 1813," inscribed and retaining a hand-written letter to the verso documenting the family provenance, presented in a period gilt frame.

Panel 17 1/2 x 13 1/8 in; Frame dimensions 21 3/4 x 17 1/2 in.

William J. Weaver was born in England, but found his fame as an itinerant portrait painter in America. He worked up and down the East coast, from Nova Scotia to Charleston, South Carolina.

Dr. Francis Joseph Upton (1796-1858) was a prominent physician from Hyde Park, New York. He was a member of the New York Academy of Medicine, as well as an early member of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club. His wife, Mary Williamson (1800-1875), was a daughter of John Williamson of Charleston, South Carolina.
