Stretcher size 23 x 30 in.; Frame dimensions 35 1/4 x 42 in.

James Hamilton was a Scottish painter, particularly known for his historical subjects. He also painted domestic genre scenes, such as the work offered here.

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1886 and exhibited his first work at the academy's annual exhibition in 1875.

Stable craquelure; faint stretcher marks; yellowing to varnish; minor chipping and rubbing to frame.
