From the Estate of the late Ron and Anne Dees, Fayetteville, North Carolina
Ron and Anne Dees were longtime collectors, lovers, and patrons of art. Starting in the late 1990s, they began their art acquisition and collection, focusing substantially on contemporary art. Their affinity for art went far beyond simply collecting and displaying. Ron served as a docent at the esteemed Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, from the late 1990s into the 2000s. In addition, they were patrons of the DC-area art scene, not only promoting and supporting contemporary artists, but also Ron worked/volunteered at several prominent DC art galleries. They continued their passion for art upon moving to Fayetteville, NC, five years ago and what you see here represents over two decades of devotion to contemporary art.

Jonathan Seliger is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY and Columbia County, NY. His objects are comprised of painted bronze and a variety of other metals, painted canvas constructions, works on paper, and outdoor painted metal commissions; his sculptures range in scale from the hand-held, table-top, pedestal, wall and floor presentations, to the monumental.

Jonathan Seliger’s reverence for everyday objects places him squarely in the Pop Art tradition, with an intricate fabrication technique that calls to mind the West Coast’s finish fetish movement as well as a postmodern concern with simulacra. Through subtle shifts in scale, color, surface and even language, Seliger’s constructions are imbued with poetry, humor and social critique. For his signature luxury bags, he flawlessly reproduces the symbols of ultra-luxury and consumerism—retail bags from Prada, Chanel, Bulgari—in a blue-collar sheen of automotive enamel on bronze.

Jonathan Seliger (b. 1955) earned his BA from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He has had over 30 solo shows around the world and has participated extensively in group exhibitions. He has exhibited at the The Schaufler Foundation, Schauwerk Sindelfingen, Germany; as part of the Panza Collection in Perugia, Palazzo della Penna and Galeria Nazionale dell’Umbria, Perugia, Italy; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA; the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; Phoenix Museum of Art, Phoenix, AZ; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA; Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX, and in many other museum and galleries throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. His work can also be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina; The Jewish Museum, New York; The Panza Collection, Lugano, Switzerland; Magasin 3, Stockholm, Sweden; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, among others.
