Walter Tate, Jr. was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After graduating from Reynolds High School in 1961, he joined the Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. After being honorably discharged, he studied art at High Point University, Davidson-Davie Community College and The Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut.

Walter maintained a studio in Old Salem for many years. His paintings were in numerous collections throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.
