Carlyle Brown was born in Los Angeles, California. After serving in the US Navy, he moved to New York where he found friendship, love and inspiration in the theatre and fashion circles. He received commissions from Harper's Bazaar and his painting were collected by Cecil Beaton, Charles James and Fulco di Verdura, among others.

At the invitation of Edward James, the foremost patron of Salvador Dali, Brown and his wife traveled to Italy where he found acceptance amongst other artists and photographers. During this period he exhibited frequently, with shows at the Catherine Viviano Gallery and Bodley Gallery in New York, as well as group shos at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
