From the Extensive International Collection of Dolores A Bilangi, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

The Mapoto is a beaded apron worn only by married women, and is first worn by the bride at the wedding ceremony. Traditionally made on leather (as seen in this example), later examples are often made on canvas. There is symbolism in the two side panels which represent the marriage partners, and the tassels a hope for child bearing.

Good estate condition; not examined out of the frame.
