Fred Zeller was born into a privileged family with ties to several artistic circles. He started painting at the age of 15 and continued his formal studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. After graduation, he was very active in the socialist and Trotskyist movements in France before and shortly after WWII.

By 1948, Zeller was devoting most of his time to painting. He continued to be active in the Socialist Party the rest of his life, but gained a following for his surrealist paintings.
