Worked in multi-color silk threads on loose weave linen, upper register with Biblical verse from Isaiah 45:22, "Look unto me / all Ye ends of / the earth an / d be saved I45" flanked by a pair of birds to one side and a stag to the other, above tree and sheep motifs and with a shepherd, bottom register centering on a heart between two apple trees and floral motifs and with a large spotted deer to center, maker's name to bottom, "Margret Mutter / Aged 9 years," within a floral and undulating border, housed under glass in a molded frame.

Frame dimensions 18.5 x 18.25 in.

Information on laminated card accompanying the sampler identifies it as German-American and states that the maker, Margret Mutter, was probably from North Carolina and is "that listed NC Hist. Reg vol I:269, 523-dau of Thomas" and "listed 1790 Census, Abrahams Plain, Granville County, Hillsborough Dist, North Carolina; mother would be Elizabeth (Moore)."

Some stitch loss; areas of loose threads to ground; retains vibrant color; frame with nicks. Not examined out-of-frame.
