Pencil on paper, unsigned, Mr. Sherrill depicted in profile and seated in a fancy chair, inscribed below image "I.A. Sherrill was born / the 18th Mar. / 1814; / And Died Sept. 19th / 1844," presented under glass in a later frame.

A descendent of Adam Sherrill, a pioneer settler who crossed the Catawba River at in 1747. The passage over the river was used by troops during the Revolutionary War. (from The North Carolina Gazetteer, 2nd Ed. by William S. Powell and Michael Hill)
