John Randolph was a planter and politician from Southside Virginia. He served in the House of Representatives, the Senate, as Minister to Russia under Andrew Jackson, and as President Thomas Jefferson's spokesman in the House.

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture has a watercolor painting of John Randolph of Roanoke by Arthur J. Stansbury that is very similar to this lot.
