Lot Details & Additional Photographs
19th century, now electrified as single socket lamps, the patinated bronze vases after the large Roman marble version of the 2nd Century CE., with Bacchic relief scene, volute handles, and foliate pedestal base, set top a shaped black marble and slate plinth, both with frosted to clear cut glass shades, unmarked.

23 1/2 x 6 1/4 x 4 1/4 in. (including shade)

From the Estate of the late Edith Cannon, New York City

The "Townley" name comes from the English collector Charles Townley (1737-1805) who purchased the vase from the Scottish antiquarian and dealer, Gavin Hamilton, who was excavating and discovered it in 1773.

Some small chips to plinth; drilled hole with crack to verso of one base.
