Edgar Rowley Smart was born in Manchester and studied at the Manchester School of Art, the Manchester Academy of Fine Art, Liverpool School of Art and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was particularly influenced by his instructors and friends, Frederick Vango Burridge and Augustus John. Following service in WWI, he spent most of his time in France.
