George Laurence Nelson studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League in New York. He continued his studies at the Académie Julian and the studies of Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant in Paris.

Upon his return to the United States, Nelson exhibited extensively - with works shown at The Pennsylvania Academy, Paris Salons, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., and others. He was elected a member of the National Academy in 1942.
